How to stop borrowing airtime and data every month

By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated

Airtime borrowing usually happens because airtime and data are bought only after they run out. The loan and its service fee then come off your next recharge, so that recharge runs out sooner. To stop, keep money set aside for your line and top it up on a schedule, before it's empty, not when it already is.

Why the line keeps borrowing

Airtime and data run out at the worst moments: in the middle of a call, when you need to send a location, when a transfer needs a code. The quickest fix is to borrow, and borrowing on a line takes seconds.

Borrowing airtime is the monthly borrowing loop in small. The line is topped up only after it's empty. When it's empty and money is short, you borrow. The next recharge pays back the loan first, so it runs out sooner, and the next gap comes earlier.

It's a common pattern, not a personal failing. Industry estimates put Nigeria's airtime lending market at ₦300 billion to ₦400 billion a year, used regularly by about 40 million Nigerians.[1]

What borrowing costs your next recharge

When you borrow airtime or data, you repay it later with a service fee.[2] The repayment comes off your next recharge.

An illustration. Loan amounts and fees vary by network.

Without borrowingAfter borrowing
Borrowed on the 20th₦500 of data
You recharge on payday₦1,000₦1,000
Taken back for the loan and its feethe ₦500 plus a fee
Left for this month₦1,000less than ₦500
The recharge you paid ₦1,000 for gives you less than half of that to use. Borrowing again becomes likely, because the line is short from day one.

What stops it, with or without Delight

  1. Find your real monthly cost. Add up last month's recharges, including the ones that repaid loans. That's what your line actually costs.
  2. Set that amount aside on payday. Airtime and data are a purpose like rent or food, not an afterthought.
  3. Top up on a schedule, before the line is empty. Weekly or monthly, whichever matches how you use it. A top-up that happens before the line runs out leaves no gap to borrow into.
  4. Stop borrowing on your line. On MTN, Airtel and Glo, a loan starts only when you request it, by code or in the app, so stopping means not requesting and letting one recharge clear what you owe. The steps for each network are on the pages for MTN, Airtel and Glo. If your line seems to borrow on its own, contact your network's customer care. Networks' rules changed during 2026, so check anything that doesn't match what you see.
  5. Keep a small buffer. A little extra in the airtime money covers a heavy week without a loan.

Set it up in Delight

  1. Create a Data & Airtime budget. Give it the monthly amount you worked out. If you keep a monthly group, add it as a sub-budget, for example under "Monthly".
  2. Let payday fund it. Check that Auto-fund is enabled on the budget, and put it near the top under Funding priority, so it fills when your salary arrives.
  3. Automate the top-up. Open the Automate tab, or tap Automate on the budget, and choose Airtime & bills. Pick your network and phone number, set the amount, and choose a schedule: monthly on a date such as your payday, or weekly on a chosen day. The first payment must be at least 30 minutes away.
  4. Add the whole house if you want. One automation can pay several recipients, with the same or different amounts, so you can top up a spouse's or a parent's line from the same budget.
  5. Know when a top-up won't go through. About 30 minutes before each scheduled payment, Delight checks the budget and tells you if its balance, a lock or drip mode will stop it. If a payment fails, you can retry it from the automation's payment history.
  6. Pay nothing extra. Airtime, data and bill payments on Delight have no charge, whether you buy them yourself or through an automation.
  7. Buy extra from the same budget. If you need more data mid-month, buy it from the Data & Airtime budget, so you can see what the line really costs.

What Delight can’t do

  • Delight can't switch off borrowing on your line. Only your network can do that. Delight keeps money set aside for airtime and data and tops up your line on the schedule you choose.
  • An automation needs money in its budget. If your Data & Airtime budget is empty or locked when a top-up is due, the payment won't go through. Delight tells you about 30 minutes before, so you can add money.
  • It doesn't lend airtime or data. Delight has no borrowing service, for airtime or anything else.

If your line borrows without your agreement

  • Ask your network, through its official app, website or customer care, how borrowing works on your line and how to stop it. Keep screenshots of any messages about loans you didn't request.
  • The FCCPC's 2025 digital lending regulations say lending must be opt-in, and the commission has moved to apply its lending rules to airtime and data credit. How those rules apply to networks was before the courts in 2026.[3][2]
  • You can report a consumer complaint to the FCCPC through File a Complaint at fccpc.gov.ng.

Questions people ask

How do I stop my line from borrowing airtime?
Borrowing on a line is controlled by your network, so the steps differ between networks and have changed during 2026. Check your network's official app, website or customer care for how to opt out of borrowing on your line. Then keep the line funded before it runs out, so there's no gap to borrow into.
How do I stop borrowing airtime from MTN, Airtel or Glo?
Each network runs its own airtime and data credit service, and its rules and dialling steps can change. Use the network's official channels to opt out. To stop needing it, set a monthly amount for airtime and data and top up on a schedule.
Why does my recharge finish so fast after I borrow airtime?
When you borrow airtime or data, the loan and a service fee are taken back when you next recharge. Part of your new recharge repays the old loan, so less of it is left for you, and you run out sooner.
Can Delight top up my airtime or data automatically?
Yes. Create an automation, choose Airtime & bills, pick your network and number, set the amount and a schedule, such as monthly on your payday or every week. It pays from the budget you choose.
Does Delight charge for buying airtime or data?
No. Airtime, data, electricity and TV bill payments on Delight have no charge.
How much should I budget for airtime and data?
Look at your last two months: add up every recharge, including the ones that repaid borrowed airtime. That total, spread across the month, is your real airtime and data cost. Budget that amount, not the amount you wish you spent.
