How to stop borrowing airtime and data on Glo, and stop needing to

By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated

On Glo, you borrow airtime with *303# and data with *321#, and a 15% charge is taken upfront. Glo recovers what you owe from your next recharge and can also take it from data you buy. To stop, clear the loan with one recharge, stop requesting new ones, and top up your line on a schedule before it runs out.

Why airtime borrowing becomes a monthly habit, and the setup that ends it, is on how to stop borrowing airtime and data every month. This page covers what's specific to Glo.

How Borrow Me Credit works on Glo

  • You request the loan. Glo's Borrow Me Credit lets eligible prepaid subscribers borrow airtime by dialling *303# or online, and borrowed airtime is deducted from the next recharge.[1]
  • Data can be borrowed too. Borrow Me Data is requested with *321#, and it's also paid back on your next recharge, with a 15% service fee.[2]
  • The charge comes off first. On Glo's airtime table, a ₦1,000 loan has a ₦150 service charge, so ₦850 is credited to you, while the full ₦1,000 comes back from your recharge.[1]
  • Not every line qualifies. Glo's eligibility rules include at least 3 months on the network and a regular recharge history.[1]
In 2026, airtime lending across the networks was disrupted by new FCCPC lending rules. After the commission paused enforcement on 22 May 2026, Glo was among the first to bring its service back.[3]

Glo can recover a loan from your data

This is the part many Glo users don't expect. Under Recovery by Data, Glo can take an outstanding Borrow Me Credit loan from data you've bought, not only from airtime recharges:[1]

  1. When you buy a new data bundle while you still owe, part or all of it can go to repaying the loan.
  2. After 72 hours, the system can trigger recovery from your data for an outstanding loan.
  3. Glo always leaves you 70MB of data for your own use, even if you still owe.
  4. Recovery can happen more than once, until the loan is fully repaid, and you get an SMS each time.
  5. You can't borrow again until the loan is fully repaid.
So if you owe Glo and buy a data plan, expect it to be smaller than you paid for until the loan is cleared.

What borrowing costs you

An illustration, using Glo's published 15% charge.

One loanFour loans a month
Borrowed₦500₦2,000
Credited to you₦425₦1,700
Recovered from your recharges or data₦500₦2,000
Charges paid₦75₦300
₦300 a month pays only for timing. And every recovery shrinks the next recharge or data bundle, so the line runs out sooner.

How to stop borrowing on Glo

  1. Clear the loan with one airtime recharge, a little bigger than what you owe, before you buy data. Then the data you buy stays yours.
  2. Stop requesting new loans. On Glo, an airtime loan starts when you dial the Borrow Me Credit code or borrow online, and a data loan when you dial the Borrow Me Data code.
  3. If your line seems to borrow on its own, contact Glo's customer care and ask them to check.
  4. Remove the gap. Top up airtime and buy data on a schedule, before either runs out.

Set it up in Delight

  1. Create a Data & Airtime budget with what your Glo line really costs in a month. Count last month's recharges and data plans, including the ones that repaid loans.
  2. Let payday fund it. Check that Auto-fund is enabled on the budget and place it near the top under Funding priority.
  3. Automate the top-up. Open Automate, choose Airtime & bills, pick Glo and your number, set the amount and a schedule, such as every Monday or monthly on your payday.
  4. Schedule the airtime top-up before the data. If you still owe, the airtime recharge clears the loan first, so your data bundle isn't recovered.
  5. Add family lines if you pay for them. One automation can top up several numbers.
  6. Pay nothing extra. Airtime and data bought through Delight have no charge. About 30 minutes before each scheduled top-up, Delight tells you if the budget won't cover it.

Or set it up in one message

Send this to Delight AI in the app. It asks for your amounts, shows every step and waits for your approval.

What Delight can’t do

  • Delight can't change settings on your Glo line. Only Glo can do that; the codes on this page are Glo's own.
  • Delight doesn't lend airtime or data. It holds money you set aside and tops up your line on the schedule you choose.
  • A scheduled top-up needs money in its budget. If the budget is empty or locked, the payment won't go through. Delight tells you about 30 minutes before, so you can add money.

If your line borrows without you asking

  • Contact Glo's customer care and ask them to check your line's Borrow Me Credit history. Keep screenshots of any loan or recovery messages you didn't expect.
  • The FCCPC's 2025 lending regulations say automatic or pre-authorised lending is prohibited.[4] The commission paused enforcement of those rules for airtime lending in May 2026.[3]
  • You can report a consumer complaint to the FCCPC through File a Complaint at fccpc.gov.ng.
