How to stop borrowing airtime on Airtel, and stop needing to
By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated
On Airtel, an airtime loan comes when you dial *303# and choose an amount, and it's repaid when you next top up. To stop, check what you owe with *310#, let one recharge clear it, stop requesting new loans, switch off pay-as-you-go browsing if data keeps eating your airtime, and top up on a schedule.
Why airtime borrowing becomes a monthly habit, and the setup that ends it, is on how to stop borrowing airtime and data every month. This page covers what's specific to Airtel.
How airtime loans work on Airtel
- You request the loan. Airtel's help pages say to borrow airtime you dial *303# and choose the amount you want.[1]
- You can check what you owe. Dial *310#, or the borrowing code, to see your loan balance.[1]
- Repayment comes from your next top-up. Airtel says you pay back by topping up airtime.[1] Borrowing airtime comes with a service fee, so what you repay is more than you could use.[2]
- Not every line qualifies. Airtel asks for at least 2 months on the network. For loans of ₦50 to ₦500, you need to have recharged that amount at least 3 times a month for 2 months in a row; for ₦1,000 to ₦2,000, at least 5 times.[1]
The other way airtime disappears: pay-as-you-go browsing
Many people borrow airtime because their airtime vanished, not because they used it on calls. One common reason: when your data bundle runs out, your phone keeps browsing and the data is charged to your airtime at pay-as-you-go rates.
Airtel's help pages give a code to opt out of pay-as-you-go browsing: dial *400*1#.[1] With it off, running out of data doesn't quietly empty your airtime, and one reason to borrow is gone.
What the loop costs
An illustration. Check Airtel's service fee when you borrow.
| Without a loan | After a loan | |
|---|---|---|
| You recharge on payday | ₦1,000 | ₦1,000 |
| Taken back for last week's loan and its fee | the loan plus the fee | |
| Left for you to use | ₦1,000 | much less than ₦1,000 |
How to stop borrowing on Airtel
- Check what you owe with *310#.
- Let one recharge clear it. Top up a little more than the loan, so something is left for you.
- Switch off pay-as-you-go browsing with the code above, so data running out doesn't drain your airtime.
- Stop requesting new loans. On Airtel, a loan comes when you dial the borrowing code and choose an amount.
- If your line seems to borrow on its own, call Airtel Customer Care on 300.[4]
- Remove the gap. Top up on a schedule, before the line is empty.
Set it up in Delight
- Create a Data & Airtime budget with what your Airtel line really costs in a month. Count last month's recharges, including the ones that repaid loans.
- Let payday fund it. Check that Auto-fund is enabled on the budget and place it near the top under Funding priority.
- Automate the top-up. Open Automate, choose Airtime & bills, pick Airtel and your number, set the amount and a schedule, such as every Monday or monthly on your payday.
- Make the first top-up big enough to clear any loan. Whatever you owe comes off that recharge first.
- Buy data as a bundle, on schedule, from the same budget, so your data doesn't run out mid-week and fall back to pay-as-you-go.
- Pay nothing extra. Airtime and data bought through Delight have no charge. About 30 minutes before each scheduled top-up, Delight tells you if the budget won't cover it.
Or set it up in one message
Send this to Delight AI in the app. It asks for your amounts, shows every step and waits for your approval.
Help me stop running out of airtime and data. Create a Data & Airtime budget and set up an automation to top up my line every month. Ask me my network, my phone number, the amounts and the date.
Delight AI is off until you turn it on in Settings › Customize › Delight AI. Anything that sends money out asks for your transaction PIN.
What Delight can’t do
- Delight can't change settings on your Airtel line. Only Airtel can do that; the codes on this page are Airtel's own.
- Delight doesn't lend airtime or data. It holds money you set aside and tops up your line on the schedule you choose.
- A scheduled top-up needs money in its budget. If the budget is empty or locked, the payment won't go through. Delight tells you about 30 minutes before, so you can add money.
If your line borrows without you asking
- Call Airtel Customer Care on 300, or visit an Airtel service centre, and ask them to check your line's loan history.[4] Keep screenshots of any loan messages you didn't expect.
- The FCCPC's 2025 lending regulations say automatic or pre-authorised lending is prohibited.[5] The commission paused enforcement of those rules for airtime lending in May 2026.[3]
- You can report a consumer complaint to the FCCPC through File a Complaint at fccpc.gov.ng.

- Why does my Airtel airtime finish after my data runs out?

- Who can borrow airtime on Airtel?
- Airtel says you need at least 2 months on the network and a regular recharge history. For larger loans of ₦1,000 to ₦2,000, it asks for more frequent recharges than for smaller ones.
