For workers whose salary comes late

What to do when your salary comes late

By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated

When salary is late, the damage comes from having nothing between payday and the bills. Cover the first weeks with a salary buffer you built earlier, pay only what can't wait, and pause flexible spending. Then make refilling the buffer the first thing your next salary does, so one late month doesn't turn into a borrowing habit.

The general way to make a salary last is on how to make your salary last. A late salary is a different problem. The month isn't too short; the payday has moved, and most plans have nothing to cover the gap.

Late pay is common, and most people have no cushion

  • Delays hit public workers in 2026. In April 2026, university lecturers and NYSC members said their March salaries and allowances hadn't been paid, and lecturers said delays had become increasingly common in recent months.[1]
  • Most people can't cover a long gap. Among banked Nigerian adults who could say how long their savings would last, 56.8% can't cover more than a month.[2]
  • Emergency money is hard to find. 62% of Nigerian adults say emergency money would be very difficult to raise.[3]
So when a salary is two weeks late, the usual options are borrowing, owing, or going without. None of that is a personal failing. It's what happens when a month's plan depends on one date that someone else controls.

Why a late salary becomes a bad month

The pressure builds as the days pass. In one study, people just before payday behaved as if they were more impatient about money, though their thinking was no less sharp.[4] A late salary stretches that "before payday" stretch by days or weeks.

Then the late salary arrives, and it's already spoken for: the loan from last week, the rent that's now overdue, the family transfer you postponed. The next month starts short, and the gap comes back sooner.

An example: a two-week delay

What works, with or without Delight

  1. Build a salary buffer before you need it. Aim for one month of essentials. Put it in a place you don't spend from, so everyday spending can't slowly use it up.
  2. When pay is late, sort costs into "can't wait" and "can wait". Rent that's due, food and transport to work can't wait. Subscriptions, planned purchases and flexible family support usually can.
  3. Pause the "can wait" payments. Tell the people involved early; a planned delay is easier on everyone than a missed payment.
  4. Refill the buffer first when salary lands. This is the step that stops one late month becoming a pattern.
  5. Get the expected date in writing. A real date lets you plan; a rumour doesn't.

Set it up in Delight

  1. Create a monthly budget called Salary buffer, with an amount you can manage every month, such as ₦20,000.
  2. Make it grow with a Stack. A budget can't hold more than its amount, so unspent money that rolls into the next month counts towards that month's ₦20,000 instead of adding to it. To build up a month of essentials, add a Stack to the Salary buffer budget in the Grow tab, with that total as the target, and choose Yes, but a limited amount, set to what a late month needs. Each time the budget is funded, your chosen share moves into the Stack, so it grows every month. Stacks don't pay interest.
  3. Put it second in the funding order. Check that Auto-fund is enabled on your budgets, then open a budget's menu, tap Funding priority, and place Salary buffer just after rent. Each salary funds it before your everyday spending.
  4. When pay is late, take out what you need from the Stack and pay rent, food and transport to work from it. Leave everything else. You can also close the Stack at any time; closing a locked Stack before it reaches its target costs 5% of its balance.
  5. Pause what can wait. Open an automation, go to Automation settings and choose Pause automation, or skip a single upcoming payment. Resume it when your salary arrives.
  6. Let it rebuild. When the salary lands, auto-funding funds the Salary buffer budget again, second after rent, and your share moves into the Stack, so it starts growing straight away.

What Delight can’t do

  • Delight can't make your employer pay on time, and it doesn't lend money to cover a late month.
  • A buffer takes time to build. If your salary is late before you've built one, Delight shows exactly which purposes can wait, but it can't create money that isn't there.
  • Scheduled payments won't go out from an empty or locked budget. Delight warns you about 30 minutes before, and you can pause an automation until your salary arrives.

Questions people ask

Why is my salary delayed?
Reasons vary: payroll processing, budget releases, a change of account details, or an employer's cash problems. Only your employer or HR can tell you which. Ask in writing for the expected payment date, so you can plan around a real date instead of a guess.
What should I do if my salary is not paid on time?
First, find out the expected date. Then cover only what can't wait (rent that's due, transport to work, food) from a buffer if you have one, and pause everything else: subscriptions, planned purchases, family transfers you can reschedule. When the salary lands, refill the buffer before anything else.
How do I write a salary delay complaint to HR?
Keep it short and factual: the month that's unpaid, the date it was due, and a request for the expected payment date. Keep a copy. If colleagues are affected too, a single letter through your union or staff association often gets a clearer answer.
Should I borrow when my salary is late?
A buffer is what makes borrowing unnecessary. If you do borrow, borrow the smallest amount for the shortest time, compare the total you'll repay rather than the amount you get, and make the repayment the first thing your salary pays. See how to stop borrowing every month.
How big should my salary buffer be?
Aim for one month of essentials: rent share, food, transport to work and bills. Start smaller if you need to. Even two weeks' worth changes a late month from a crisis into an inconvenience.
