For anyone whose food spending keeps running away

How to stop spending all your money on food

By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated

Food money disappears because it's spent in two very different ways from the same balance: planned market runs and small daily buys. Give each its own budget. Fund market money weekly, release daily food money as a fixed daily amount, and put a cap on single orders for eating out and delivery.

For most people, food isn't one expense. It's the Saturday market run, the lunch you buy at work, the suya on the way home, the delivery order when you're too tired to cook. All of it usually comes out of the same balance, which is why it's so hard to see. The general way to control spending is on how to control your spending. This page is about food.

Why food takes so much

Prices have risen fast. In August 2026, food inflation was 19.57% year on year, and food and non-alcoholic drinks were the largest contributor to Nigeria's inflation, adding 6.16 percentage points. Restaurants and accommodation added another 1.99 points.[1] Food money that was enough last year may not be now.

Food is bought in pieces. A ₦2,500 lunch and a ₦1,500 snack don't feel like much, but on every working day they come to about ₦88,000 a month. (An illustration.) Breaking money into smaller portions slows how fast it's used, because each portion adds a small moment of decision.[2] The reverse is also true: one big balance is easy to spend without noticing.

Labels change how money is spent. When part of a budget carries a label, people spend it according to the label.[3] Food money with no label competes with everything else.

Two kinds of food spending share one pot. Market buying is planned and weekly. Daily food is small and constant. When they come from the same money, the daily buys quietly eat the market money, and by Friday there's nothing for the weekend shop.

What helps, with or without Delight

  1. Split food into three purposes: market (foodstuff for the house), daily food (lunch, snacks, drinks) and eating out or delivery.
  2. Give the market a weekly amount, and take a list. A fixed amount per trip is easier to keep than a monthly total.
  3. Give daily food a daily amount. You'll know every morning what today can spend.
  4. Cap single orders for eating out and delivery, so one big order stops and asks before it goes through.
  5. Keep enjoyment in the plan. Eating out isn't a failure. It's a purpose with its own amount.
  6. Look at one real month. Your statement will show where food money actually went, which beats guessing.

BudgetAmountControl

Daily food₦1,000 a dayDrip mode, Daily
Eating out & delivery₦10,000 a monthPer-Transaction Limit of ₦5,000
  1. Create a Food group with three sub-budgets: Market, Daily Food, and Eating Out & Delivery. Check that Auto-fund is enabled, and set their place under Funding priority after rent and bills.
  2. Put drip mode on Market, set to Weekly. Only that week's Available Drip can be spent, so the weekend shop is protected from midweek buys.
  3. Put drip mode on Daily Food, set to Daily. Choose Roll over to next Drip, so a day you bring food from home makes tomorrow bigger.
  4. Add a Per-Transaction Limit to Eating Out & Delivery. An order above ₦5,000 then stops and asks you to confirm. If you go ahead, the penalty is 5% of the amount above the limit: on a ₦7,000 order, 5% of ₦2,000, so ₦100.
  5. If weekends are when food runs away, add a Period Spending Limit set to Every Weekend on Eating Out & Delivery.
  6. Pay from the budget the food is for. Each payment is recorded against its budget, and the Monthly Recap shows next month where food money went.

What Delight can’t do

  • Delight doesn't block restaurants or delivery apps. Controls act on money in your Delight budgets, not on what you buy with money kept elsewhere.
  • A spending limit can be exceeded. It warns you, shows the penalty and asks you to confirm; going over costs 5% of the amount above the limit. Drip mode is the control that can't be exceeded.
  • Delight can't set your food amounts. Use last month's real spending as the starting point, then adjust.

Questions people ask

How do I stop spending all my money on food?
Split food into market money and daily money, and give each its own amount. Market money is funded weekly for planned buying; daily money is released as a fixed amount each day. Eating out and delivery get a cap on single orders. Then food can't quietly take money meant for rent.
Why do I spend so much money on food?
Partly because food prices have risen fast: food inflation was 19.57% in the year to August 2026. And partly because food is bought many times a day, in small amounts, from the same balance as everything else. Small buys don't feel big until you add them up.
How do I stop spending money on food delivery?
Give delivery and eating out their own small budget, and put a per-transaction limit on it. The limit makes a large order stop and ask you first. You can still order; it just comes from money meant for it, not from the market money.
How do I save money on food in Nigeria?
Plan one or two market runs a week with a list and a fixed amount, cook in batches where you can, and keep daily food money to a set amount. Tracking what you actually spent for one month shows where the leaks are.
How much should I spend on food a month?
There's no single right number; it depends on your household, city and income. Start from what last month actually cost, then decide what you want it to be, and set your market and daily amounts to match.
