How to enjoy owambe season without the aso-ebi debt
By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated
Owambe spending hurts when every invitation is decided on its own, from the same money as rent and food. Give celebrations their own monthly budget, decide the aso-ebi and gift amount for each event before you're asked, and cap single payments. You still show up for the people you love, from money that was meant for it.
Celebrations matter here. Weddings, birthdays, naming ceremonies, burials: showing up for people matters. The trouble is how the money gets spent: an aso-ebi message in a group chat, a gift decided on the day, a Saturday of transport, all from the same balance as rent and food. The general way to control spending is on how to control your spending. This page is about party season.
Why owambe spending runs away
Each invitation is decided alone. One aso-ebi looks affordable. Three weddings, a birthday and a burial in the same month don't, but by the time you see that, the fabric is already bought.
The costs come in layers: the fabric, the tailor, the gift, transport, sometimes accommodation, and the cash people used to spray.
That last one has changed. Spraying naira has been banned since 2007, and the ban is now being enforced. Violators could face up to six months in prison or a ₦50,000 fine, and some guests now drop notes into bags on the dance floor instead.[1] In July 2026, a Federal High Court in Warri convicted 12 people for spraying naira at a party.[2] Planning your gift as a transfer is simpler, and it's legal.
What helps, with or without Delight
- Give celebrations their own money. A fixed monthly amount for aso-ebi, gifts and transport, funded on payday like any other purpose. Separate pots work: in a field experiment with low-income households, people saved more when earmarked money was split into two accounts than when it was pooled in one.[3]
- List the events in advance. Most invitations come weeks ahead. Put them in one place with a date and an amount.
- Decide the amount per event before you're asked. "₦25,000 for aso-ebi and tailoring, ₦10,000 gift" is easier to keep than a decision made in a group chat.
- Save ahead for the big ones. A sibling's or close friend's wedding deserves its own target and date.
- Let quiet months fill the pot. Busy months are then paid for, not borrowed for.
- Enjoy it. The point isn't to go to fewer parties. It's to go without the next month paying for it.

| Budget | Amount | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Celebrations | ₦40,000 a month | Per-Transaction Limit of ₦25,000, and a Period Spending Limit for Every Weekend |
| Big event: sister's wedding | Target ₦150,000 by the week before | A Stack on the Celebrations budget, No, lock until due |
- Create a Celebrations budget that repeats monthly, and check that Auto-fund is enabled. Place it under Funding priority after rent, bills and food.
- Add a Per-Transaction Limit, for example ₦25,000, so any single aso-ebi or gift payment above it stops and asks you first. Going over costs 5% of the amount above the limit.
- Add a Period Spending Limit set to Every Weekend, so a single weekend of events can't take the whole month's amount.
- For a big event, add a Stack to the Celebrations budget with the event's full cost as the target and a due date the week before. Each time the budget is funded, your chosen share moves in. On the due date it unlocks, and its money is spendable for 7 days.
- Send gifts by transfer from the Celebrations budget. Transfers to other Delight users are free; bank transfers carry the standard bank charge.
- Save quiet months for busy ones with the Stack. Unspent money that rolls into the next month counts towards that month's amount rather than adding to it, so a budget alone can't build up. To carry quiet months into party season, put extra into the Celebrations Stack with Fund Stack.

What Delight can’t do
- Delight can't decide which celebrations matter to you. It holds the amount you choose and shows what's left.
- A spending limit can be exceeded. It warns you and asks you to confirm; going over costs 5% of the amount above the limit.
- Delight doesn't hand out cash at events. Gifts go by transfer from your budget; transfers to other Delight users are free, and bank transfers carry the standard bank charge.
Questions people ask
- How do I budget for aso-ebi?
- Give celebrations a monthly amount, list the events you've been invited to, and decide which ones you'll buy aso-ebi for and how much each can take, including tailoring. When a new invitation comes, the question becomes whether this month's celebrations budget can carry it.
- How do I save for owambe season?
- Fund a celebrations budget every payday, even in quiet months, so busy months are already paid for. For one big event, such as a sibling's wedding, set a separate savings target with a date just before the event.
- Is spraying money illegal in Nigeria?
- Yes. Spraying naira has been banned since 2007 under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, and it's now being enforced. In July 2026 a Federal High Court in Warri sentenced 12 people to six months in prison, with the option of a fine, for spraying naira at a party.
- How much should I give as a wedding gift?
- There's no right number; it depends on the relationship and on what your budget can carry this month. Decide the amount before the day, so the gift comes from your celebrations budget and not from money meant for rent or food.
- Can I attend without buying aso-ebi?
- That's your call, and many people choose a few events a year to buy for. What matters is that the choice is made with your numbers in front of you, not on the spot in a group chat.
