How to make your NYSC allowance last the month
By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated
Split your ₦77,000 allowance the day it lands, before you spend any of it: accommodation and transport first, then food released weekly, then data. Keep a small buffer for months the allowance comes late, and give any state or PPA money its own purpose. The allowance lasts when the first week can't reach the last week's money.
A monthly allowance runs out early for the same reason a salary does: it's all spendable from day one. The general fix is on how to make your money last. This page is about what's different for corps members.
How your money arrives during service
- The federal allowance is ₦77,000 a month. It was raised from ₦33,000 and paid from March 2025, in line with the ₦70,000 national minimum wage.[1]
- It doesn't always arrive on time. In April 2026, corps members and university lecturers said their March allowances and salaries still hadn't been paid.[2]
- Some states pay an extra allowance, and it differs by state. Ebonyi, for example, approved ₦30,000 a month for every corps member serving there in August 2026.[3]
- Your place of primary assignment may pay you something, or nothing.
Why the allowance runs out
The first days after the allowance lands are when spending jumps. That isn't only corps members: research on monthly payments finds spending on things like eating out rises on the day money arrives, even when the date is known in advance.[4]
Then come the costs of service itself: transport to your PPA every weekday, a share of accommodation, data for CDS groups and job searches. By the third week the allowance is thin, and if next month's payment is late, there's nothing between you and borrowing.

| Purpose | Amount | How it's held |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation share | ₦20,000 | Funded first, the day the allowance lands |
| Transport to PPA | ₦15,000 | ₦750 each weekday |
| Food | ₦24,000 | ₦6,000 a week |
| Data and airtime | ₦5,000 | One monthly top-up |
| Toiletries and others | ₦8,000 | Spent as needed |
| Late-allowance buffer | ₦5,000 | Kept aside until it's needed |
| Total | ₦77,000 |
What works, with or without Delight
- Split the allowance the day it lands. Accommodation and transport first, because they can't be skipped. Then food, data and the buffer.
- Release food money weekly. ₦6,000 a week is easier to live within than ₦24,000 at once. Splitting money into smaller portions slows how fast it's used, because each portion adds a small moment of decision.[5]
- Build a late-allowance buffer, a little at a time. ₦5,000 a month adds up to a week or two of food and transport by mid-service. When the allowance is late, the buffer carries you instead of a loan.
- Treat state and PPA money as its own purpose. It arrives on different dates and in different amounts. Saving it for after service turns small payments into a real cushion.
- Plan for passing out. The allowance ends with your service year, and the months after are often the tightest. Every naira you set aside now makes that stretch easier.
Set it up in Delight
- Sign up with your NIN. Delight accounts are for adults aged 18 and over. Tier 1 holds up to ₦300,000 and allows ₦50,000 in transfers a day, which is enough for a service year.
- Create a group called "Service year" with sub-budgets for Accommodation, Transport, Food, Data, Others and Buffer.
- Let the allowance fill them in order. Check that Auto-fund is enabled on each budget, then open a budget's menu, tap Funding priority, put Accommodation, Transport and Food at the top and Buffer last. When you transfer the allowance in, the top budgets fill first.
- Put drip mode on Transport and Food. Choose Week Days for Transport, at ₦3,750 for each Monday-to-Friday stretch (₦750 a working day), so money is released only for your PPA week. Choose Weekly for Food, at ₦6,000, which resets every Monday. Only the Available Drip can be spent, and it can't be exceeded.
- Grow the Buffer with a Stack. Give the Buffer ₦5,000 a month. A budget can't hold more than its amount, so unspent money that rolls into the next month counts towards that month's amount instead of adding to it. To build a cushion, add a Stack to the Buffer budget in the Grow tab, with a target such as a week or two of food and transport by mid-service, and choose Yes, but a limited amount, so you can take out a set sum when you need it. Each time the Buffer is funded, your chosen share moves into the Stack. Stacks don't pay interest. When the allowance is late, take out what you need and spend it on purpose.
- Automate your data. Set a monthly data or airtime payment from the Data budget. Airtime and data payments have no charge.
- Save for after service with a Stack. In the Grow tab, create a Stack with your passing-out date as the due date, choose No, lock until due, and add state or PPA money to it with Fund Stack. Stacks don't pay interest; they keep the money for its purpose.

What Delight can’t do
- Delight can't pay or speed up your allowance. When it comes late, the buffer you built is what carries you.
- Delight doesn't lend money, so it can't cover a late month for you.
- Delight accounts are for adults. You need to be at least 18, and you verify with your NIN and a selfie when you sign up.
Questions people ask
- How much is the NYSC allowance per month?
- The federal allowance is ₦77,000 a month. It was raised from ₦33,000 and paid from March 2025, in line with the ₦70,000 national minimum wage. Some states pay corps members an extra allowance, and amounts differ from state to state, so check what your state and place of primary assignment pay.
- When is the NYSC allowance paid?
- There's no date you can count on. Some months have come late, such as March 2026. Plan as if the allowance could arrive a week or two after you expect it: keep a small buffer for food and transport, and let the allowance refill it when it lands.
- Is ₦77,000 enough for a corps member?
- It depends on your state, your rent and how far your PPA is. In many places it covers the basics only if it's split on the day it arrives. Write down what accommodation, transport, food and data really cost you. If the total is more than your allowance, you know the exact gap you're working with.
- How much should I save from my NYSC allowance?
- Start with a small fixed amount you won't miss, such as ₦5,000 a month, for a late-allowance buffer. Once that covers a week or two of food and transport, put any state or PPA money towards life after service, when the allowance stops.
- Can I receive my NYSC allowance in Delight?
- Every Delight user gets a Nigerian account number that can receive transfers. You can transfer your allowance into Delight when it arrives, and money from your state or PPA can be sent straight to your Delight account number.
