How to make your ₦20,000 NELFUND upkeep last the month

By Samuel Anwakang, Co-founder of Delight•Updated

Treat each ₦20,000 upkeep payment as a month's budget, not extra money. On the day it lands, set aside data and transport, then release food money weekly, about ₦3,000 at a time. Keep a little back each month for when upkeep is late, and plan for the gap at the end of the session, when upkeep stops.

₦20,000 disappears fast when it all sits in one balance. The general fix is on how to make your money last. This page is about what's different when your money is NELFUND upkeep.

How upkeep arrives

  • It's ₦20,000 a month. NELFUND said in March 2026 that the approved monthly upkeep remains ₦20,000.[1]
  • It's part of your student loan, and it follows your session. When your institution's academic year ends, upkeep for that session stops, and you reapply at the start of the next session.[2]
  • It doesn't always come on time. In July 2026, some students said they had last received their upkeep in April, and others got May's upkeep only at the end of July. One student had borrowed from a friend, expecting to repay when upkeep arrived.[3]
So upkeep is a fixed, small amount, with gaps you can't always predict and a gap at the end of every session that you can. Your plan has to cover both.

Why it runs out

When ₦20,000 lands, it feels like more than it is. There are dues, a friend's birthday, a weekend out. The data runs out mid-month, and the small top-ups come out of food money. By the third week, food money has gone to other things.

And when upkeep is late, there's nothing behind it. Borrowing from a friend "until upkeep comes" feels safe, until upkeep doesn't come.

An example month

An illustration. Your costs depend on your school and where you live.

PurposeAmountHow it's held
Data₦2,000One monthly bundle
Transport₦3,500Kept for school days
Food₦12,000₦3,000 a week
Toiletries and printing₦1,500Spent as needed
Late-upkeep buffer₦1,000Kept aside until it's needed
Total₦20,000
Upkeep rarely covers everything. If money also comes from home or a small job, give it its own purposes too (see how to budget as a university student).

What works, with or without Delight

  1. Split upkeep the day it lands. Data and transport first, because running out of either costs you more later.
  2. Buy data once a month, not in small top-ups. One planned bundle is easier to keep track of than several emergency ones, and it doesn't eat into food money.
  3. Release food money weekly. ₦3,000 a week is easier to keep to than ₦12,000 at once. Splitting money into smaller portions slows how fast it's used.[4]
  4. Keep ₦1,000 back every month. By the end of the session, that's a small cushion for a late month.
  5. Plan for the end of the session. Upkeep stops when the session ends. Anything you save during the session is what you'll live on until the next one starts.

Set it up in Delight

  1. Sign up with your NIN. Delight accounts are for adults aged 18 and over. Tier 1 holds up to ₦300,000, which is more than enough for upkeep.
  2. Create a group called "School month" with sub-budgets for Data, Transport, Food, Others and Buffer.
  3. Let upkeep fill them in order. Check that Auto-fund is enabled on each budget, then open a budget's menu, tap Funding priority, put Data, Transport and Food at the top and Buffer last. When you transfer your upkeep in, the top budgets fill first.
  4. Put drip mode on Food. Choose Weekly and ₦3,000. It resets every Monday, and only the Available Drip can be spent. Choose Roll over to next Drip, so a cheap week makes the next one bigger.
  5. Automate your data. Set a monthly data payment from the Data budget. Airtime and data payments have no charge.
  6. Grow the Buffer with a Stack. Give the Buffer ₦1,000 a month. A budget can't hold more than its amount, so unspent money that rolls into the next month counts towards that month's amount instead of adding to it. To build a cushion, add a Stack to the Buffer budget in the Grow tab, with a target such as a small cushion by the end of the session, and choose Yes, but a limited amount, so you can take out a set sum when you need it. Each time the Buffer is funded, your chosen share moves into the Stack. Stacks don't pay interest. It covers a late month, or the gap before the next session's upkeep.
  7. Check your Monthly Recap. Early each month it shows where the previous month's money went, if you made more than 5 transactions, so you can adjust the amounts.

What Delight can’t do

  • Delight isn't connected to NELFUND. It can't check, speed up or change your upkeep. You transfer the money in when it arrives.
  • Delight doesn't lend money, so it can't cover a month when upkeep is late.
  • Delight accounts are for adults. You need to be at least 18, and you verify with your NIN and a selfie when you sign up.

Questions people ask

How much is NELFUND upkeep per month?
NELFUND said in March 2026 that the approved monthly upkeep allowance remains ₦20,000. It's paid as part of the student loan, so it's worth planning every naira of it.
How many months is NELFUND upkeep paid for?
Upkeep follows your institution's academic session. When the session ends, upkeep for that session stops, and you reapply at the start of the next session for fees and upkeep. Plan for the months between sessions, when no upkeep comes in.
Why is my NELFUND upkeep delayed?
Delays have happened. In July 2026, some students said they had last received upkeep in April. Delight can't tell you why a payment is late or speed it up; check NELFUND's official channels. What you can control is a small buffer, so a late month doesn't mean borrowing.
How do I survive on ₦20,000 a month in school?
Give each part of the ₦20,000 a purpose before you spend any of it: data first, then transport, then food released weekly. Keep ₦1,000 or so back for a late month. If money from home or a small job also comes in, budget it the same way instead of letting it mix with upkeep.
Is NELFUND upkeep a loan?
Yes. NELFUND describes upkeep as part of its student loans. That's one more reason to plan it: it's money you'll repay, so it should go to the things you actually need during the session.
